Just like every year, Esther Grischott from Pignia will once again be heating the large “Dirty Pot”—an old wash tub—over a fire for the Eco Print workshop.
During waiting time (dyeing in the dirty pot, developing photos in the sun, etc.) we experiment with other techniques, such as Cyanotype, Hapa Zome, and Flower Bundle Dye.
Eco Print (also known as plant printing or contact dyeing) is an eco-friendly process in which natural dyes from leaves, flowers, and other plant parts are transferred directly onto fabrics (natural fibers like silk and wool) or paper using steam or heat.
Cyanotype (Greek for “blue print”), also known as sun printing, is a simple photographic process that uses sunlight or UV light. This old photographic printing process produces images in bluish tones.
Hapa Zome (Japanese for “leaf dyeing”) is a creative technique in which flowers and leaves are transferred to fabric or paper by hammering to print natural pigments directly onto the material.
Flower Bundle Dye is a natural dyeing technique in which flowers, leaves, and plant parts are placed directly on fabric, tightly rolled up (bundled), and then steamed. The heat and moisture cause the plant pigments to transfer onto the fabric.
