Sound touches the body

Sound touches the body through vibration. It supports relaxation and regeneration, guiding us back to our own inner balance.

Sound Therapy KLA®

Sound Therapy KLA® is a holistic therapeutic approach developed by Hans Hägi-Santana, addressing body, mind, and soul as an interconnected whole. Through the use of overtone-rich single-tone instruments, particularly the monochord sound bed, harmonious vibrations are created that penetrate deeply into the body, supporting balance and harmony. Many clients experience a state of deep relaxation after only a short time.

The foundation of this approach is the natural harmonic series – a natural order of sound whose principles are also reflected in the structures of nature. It represents harmony, growth, and unfolding.

Die Monochord Sound Bed

The Signature Instrument of Sound Therapy KLA®

The sound bed – also known as the monochord – was developed by my teacher, Hans Hägi-Santana. As part of my training, I had the privilege of building my own sound bed under his guidance.

Its 55 strings, all tuned to the same pitch, create both powerful vibrations that can be felt throughout the body and an enveloping sound rich in delicate acoustic beatings. Both arise from the overtones of the natural harmonic series.

A unique playing technique sustains a continuous fundamental tone (drone), allowing the harmonic overtones to unfold naturally and create an immersive sound experience.

Tibetan Singing Bowls and XD Resonance Tubes

At the beginning of each session, a sound canopy is created using Tibetan singing bowls and XD tubes, arranged symmetrically around the abdomen and head. Carefully selected for this purpose, the singing bowls complement the monochord sound bed while covering a narrower frequency spectrum.

The XD tubes were developed by Hans Hägi-Santana and are made of brass. They work on the principle of binaural beats: two tubes with a frequency difference of one to two hertz encourage synchronisation between the brain's hemispheres, supporting centredness, focused attention, and inner calm.

The Chinese Tam-Tam Gong

The Chinese Tam-Tam gong – hand-forged from bronze and measuring 100 cm in diameter – brings each sound therapy session to a close. It is the most powerful of my instruments, with an extraordinary range of frequencies and an endless richness of sound that continues to surprise me.

When played with mindful intention, it unfolds a deeply cleansing and clarifying effect on every level, inviting listeners into a profound and captivating sonic experience.

My Journey from Music to Sound Art and Sound Therapy

I grew up in a musical family, where music was a natural part of everyday life. From an early age, I played the violoncello, sang, and explored a variety of instruments, gradually developing my own artistic language through sound.

While studying at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts, my first sound composition, Metallurgical Symphony, emerged from the sounds of the metal workshop. This experience opened up the fascinating world of sound art for me. I began recording and composing with found sounds, composing music for theatre productions and radio plays for Swiss Radio DRS2, as well as developing sound installations and performances. One of my most significant projects was Webstall with the Musical Loom – an interactive sound installation presented at concerts and festivals.

During my own healing journey, I encountered the monochord sound bed and immediately recognised its profound potential. After my first experiences with sound therapy, I chose to deepen my studies in Sound Therapy KLA® at the Klanghaus Moosschür, where I also built my first monochord sound bed.

What continues to inspire me today is the simplicity and depth of these instruments. In the resonance between sound and the person receiving it, unique sonic spaces emerge every time. Most rewarding of all is witnessing the deep relaxation, enhanced well-being, and positive changes that people experience through this work.

Gong-Reise in Ségou, Mali

Gong Meditation during Segou’Art at Villa Bogo in Ségou, Mali, 2021

“Being in resonance with cosmic laws and vibrations thus forms both an existential foundation for harmony, health, and well-being, as well as for reactivating our inner healing processes. The connecting element is always the shared vibration in resonance with one another. Re-sonare means ‘to sound together.’

Resonance always involves a mutual give-and-take: on the one hand, being in resonance requires openness and receptivity within ourselves to the vibrations coming from outside. On the other hand, it requires the ability — and even the necessity — to respond with an internal learning process of our own. Living vibrations within us can enable or support a resonant, living field in other people, and vice versa.

When an organ or area of the body is healthy, it produces its own natural resonance frequency, which is in harmony — in one-sound — with the entire “universe” of the body. The entire cosmos corresponds to our body-universe, and vice versa.”
